Jesus is god not God!
December 12, 2021The seen and unseen God
January 13, 2022What does “God is spirit” mean?
Whenever I show that the Bible teaches God is a Person, i.e., a single Divine individual and not a human person, one of the first objections I hear from both trinis and non trinis alike is John 4:24:
“God is spirit.”
Most people seem to think that Jesus is teaching something about God as a corporeal being, I.e., a person, an individual.
But the verse is not about God’s composition or, as some put it, “his metaphysical being,” but about what God is like.
The clause is similar to the phrase “God is light” (1 John 1:5) and “God is love” (1 John 4:8).
So in effect Jesus is saying that God Himself is full of spirit, just like God is said to be full of love and full of light.
And that “those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth,” primarily through the study and obedience of the law of His Messiah.
As the voice from heaven repeatedly says, like a drumbeat, throughout the Gospels:
“This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; Listen to him!” Mat 17:5; Luke 9:35; Mar 9:7; cp. John 12:28
So if you love Jesus you will keep his words just as he obeyed the commandments of his Father and remained his beloved Son.
NOTE: the KJV, “God is a Spirit,” I.e., a single individual, the Father, as Jesus had already said in vv. 21, 23.
