“If possible….”

The world has a general view of Jesus as more than human. That’s in large part due to the fact that most of Christianity believes in the “God-man” Jesus. But the scriptures describe the human, uniquely procreated Son of God, who could have sinned but did not sin.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary on Job 4:18 says that “whatever might be the holiness of a creature, it was possible to conceive that he might sin.” (Italics mine) This of course was also true for Jesus himself. For example, Hebrews 4:15 says that Jesus, as our high priest, understands every weakness of ours, “because he was tempted in every way that we are yet, did not sin”!  In other words, in his short life Jesus faced the same weaknesses, thoughts and feelings that assail each and every one of us.  As a matter of fact, at one time Jesus felt so much fear and dread over his upcoming suffering and death that he pleaded to his God and Father:

“If You are willing, if possible, please remove this cup from me.” (NOTE according to Matthew 26 he asked for this twice and possibly even thrice according to Mark 14!)

And even with his last breath, while suffering a torturous death, he asked his Father:  “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” Some understand this saying as Jesus, for the last time, fulfilling OT scriptures like Psalm 22. But what if Jesus really felt stranded, abandoned, deserted, perhaps even forsaken by his own God and Father?

Wouldn’t you?

Jesus’ self-awareness of his own limitations explains why throughout the Gospels, especially in the Gospel of John, he continually says “the Son can do nothing by himself.” And that his very life is dependent upon his God and Father (John 5.26; 6.57).
